The Australian Jazz Convention is a week-long event where musicians from all around Australia and overseas, come to play music, meet other musicians (for the 1st time, or the 50th time), have a good laugh, and relax. Although it is organised as a Convention for musicians (rather than a festival for the general public), many non-musicians also attend, to listen to a LOT of Jazz, catch up with friends, make new friends, and join in the fun. It began in 1946 and has run every year since then, making it the longest running annual Jazz event in the world. Held in a different town in Australia every year, it begins on 26th December, and concludes with a big party on New Year's Eve. As the Convention is held in a different town each year, the committee of organisers vary, ranging from musicians and Jazz enthusiasts, to event organisers and councils. Neither the committee nor musicians financially profit from any aspect of the Convention - instead, any profits raised are channelled back into the Convention fund.
Following a meeting in early 2008, an incorporated association was formed on 1 April 2008 to organize the 64th Convention in December 2009. The present membership of the "64th Convention” consists mainly of the persons who were elected to the initial committee. Any Jazz enthusiasts who would like to assist in the preparations for this great event or join the Committee, are invited to become members of the Convention. Membership is FREE and imposes no obligations on you. |
